How to Make a Kissing Ball

How to Make a Kissing Ball

While many times you will see kissing balls made out of greenery or flowers, we made our kissing balls out of ribbon. We made these for my daughter’s wedding — she really loved the whimsical look of these.

These can be used to decorate for any event or occasion. All you really have to do is change the color of the ribbon used. You can also stick small flowers or greenery in these to mix it up a little bit. What do you think?

Supplies Needed to Make a Kissing Ball:

  • 6-inch styrofoam ball
  • 200 Small Straight Pins
  • 10 Spools of Ribbon (each should measure about 3 yds)
  • Craft Glue

Tools Needed:

  • Scissors

The first thing you need to do is cut the ribbon. You will need roughly 200 5-inch pieces. I used 10 different colors/styles of ribbon and cut approximately 20 pieces from each kind of ribbon. I say approximately because not all of the spools had 3 yards of ribbon on it — some had more and some had less. Just so you end up with about 200 pieces, you will be fine.

Grab a piece of ribbon and form a loop with it. Overlap the ends of the ribbon by about a half an inch and push a straight pin through the loop from the inside.

Now, stick the straight pin into the styrofoam ball. We had no problem getting the straight pins to stay in place. If you are worried about this, you can put a little glue on the point of each straight pin before you poke it into the styrofoam ball.

Grab a second piece of ribbon, make a loop with that one, and stick a straight pin through it like you did with the first. Poke this one into the styrofoam ball right next to the first one.

stick another loop into styrofoam ball

Keep doing this, getting the ribbon loops as close together as you can.

You will want to fill in the entire styrofoam ball with ribbon loops. You don’t want any of the styrofoam ball to show.

Cut one more piece of ribbon that is about 20-inches long. Fold the piece of ribbon in half and poke a straight pin through the fold which should be in the middle of the ribbon. Squeeze a generous amount of glue onto the end of the straight pin. Poke that straight pin into the styrofoam ball and let the glue dry.

7 add long ribbon for hanging

Once the glue dries, you can hang up the kissing ball. Tie the ends of the long ribbon together to hang. Trim the ends of the ribbon if needed. We made these yellow and some black kissing balls that hang from the church pews for my daughter’s wedding. Those kissing balls even had small flowers poked in them.
