Can you believe this simple ornament is made with cardboard and red and white twine or hemp? You can use this same technique to make ornaments using any simple shapes. You should be able to find a variety of different colored twine or hem at your local craft store. You could also try it using baker’s twine.
Supplies Needed to Make a Twine Candy Cane:
- Corrugated Cardboard
- Red and White Twine or Hemp
- Hot Glue Sticks
Tools Needed:
- Scissors
- Hot Glue Gun
Cut a candy cane shape out of corrugated cardboard. You can draw one out first or just grab your scissors and start cutting.
Use the hot glue to attach one end of the red twine to the bottom of the cardboard candy cane. Start wrapping the twine around the cardboard. You may have to use a few dabs of glue to keep the twine tight.
Wrap about an inch of the cardboard with the red twine. Glue the end of the red twine down and switch to white. Wrap about an inch of white twine.
Continue wrapping the candy cane, alternating between the red and white twine, until the entire candy cane shape is covered. Looking at the picture you will notice that you will need to overlap some of the twine when you are going around the bend in the candy cane.
Cut a piece of twine that is about 10-inches long. Tie the ends together using an over-hand knot so it is a loop. Glue the knotted end of the loop to the back of the candy cane.
You can now hang your candy cane on the tree. Have fun with this project and use a variety of different colors and cardboard shapes.
