What do you think of this cute pine cone owl?
Our yard is full of pine trees so, as a result, it is also full of pine cones. When my kids were younger, we used to pay them by the bucketful to pick them all up. Now, that chore is mine. Sometimes the pine cones I find are too perfectly shaped to simply throw in the fire pit so I figured I would make something out of them.
To make this little owl, all I used was felt, a pine cone, and a small branch. I had so much fun making him I can’t wait to make more animals. Do you have any suggestions?
Supplies Needed to Make a Pine Cone Owl:
- Pine Cone
- Felt
- Google Eyes
- Small Branch
- Craft Glue
Tools Needed:
- Scissors
If, like me, you are gathering pine cones from your yard, you will want to make sure you pre-treat your pine cones. Why? To make sure your pine cones aren’t full of bugs, seeds, or even sap. To do this, simply set your oven to 200 degrees, line a cookie sheet with foil, place the pine cones on the cookie sheet, and place them in the oven for about an hour.
While your pine cones are in the oven, you can gather your other supplies. You can also cut out your felt pieces.
As you can tell by looking at the picture above, I used brown, yellow, and orange felt. Of course, you don’t have to use these colors. You can use whatever colors you like. You should cut a 2-inch square out of brown felt for the top of the owl’s head. Cut 2 wings out of brown felt. To make the eyes, cut a figure 8 out of yellow felt. Out of orange felt, you will cut a beak and 2 feet.
If you want to use a pattern, you can save and print out these:
Once you have all your felt pieces cut, and your pine cone is done in the oven, you can start assembling your owl. Use the photo here as a guide to glue the felt pieces onto the pine cone. Glue the wiggle eyes onto the yellow figure 8. Finally, glue the owl onto the branch.
How will you display your pine cone owl?
