This book, Let’s Sew Together: Simple Projects the Whole Family Can Make (affiliate link), would make a fun addition to any family’s craft book collection. As you can gather from the title of this book, this book is full of simple projects the entire family can make together. You will find plenty of sewing projects, great how-tos, and even some no-sew activities.
Rubyellen Bratcher, the author, does a wonderful job covering the basics of sewing. She goes over basic sewing supplies, explaining what is needed and how to use it. She introduced some optional tools you might want to try. She touches on different machine stitches and basic hand sewing techniques. You will also learn some embroidery and quilting techniques, and find great instruction about how to add closures like buttons and zippers.
I found the sewing projects in this book to be uncomplicated and unique. Some of them are great for kids to try and others can be made for kids. Several of them are made using fabric that kids have painted on or drawn on with fabric markers. I love this idea and think it is a great way to draw kids into a sewing project even if they don’t do the actual sewing themselves.
These sewing projects are spread out over 5 chapters, each of them packed full of fun for the family. Each chapter has a different theme. The chapters are titled Let’s Get Dressed, Let’s Eat, Let’s Learn, Let’s Play, and Let’s Celebrate. Along with several sewing projects, in each chapter you will find no-sew projects kids will enjoy, educational activities to try, suggestions for books the family can read, and much more.
You will find a nice variety of projects in this book. Here is a sampling of the projects you will find in each chapter:
Let’s Get Dressed – Ship-Shape Fabric Necklaces, Sweetly Sketch & Tie Reversible Frock, Running in the Sun Shorts, and Super Happy Slippers
Let’s Eat – Cheerful Flip ‘Em Placemats, Fill Up with Fruit & Veggie Softies, and Tickled Pink Picnic Blanket
Let’s Learn – Hanging Chalkboard, Get-It-Done Chore Chart, Travel the World Quilt, Their Artwork Zippered Pouch, and Clever Appliqué Backpacks
Let’s Play –– Big Box Theater Troupe, Quirky Rag Doll, Jolly Mr. Robot, and Colorful Plaid A-Frame Tent
Let’s Celebrate – Hello Sweet Banner, Get Groovy Garlands, Smart Party Bags, and Toss the Tail on The Bear Game
This is not a complete list of sewing projects in this book and as you can see, there is definitely something for everyone. Remember, there are also plenty of no sew projects included in this book to keep everyone entertained. I bet many will become family favorites that you end up doing over and over again.
